The Future of Social Media and Email Integration

The concept of integrating social media within email marketing has been a hot topic as of late, with marketers learning to use the two channels to complement each other rather than compete. A survey of small businesses found the most common tactics implemented last year were tweeting email newsletters and sending out blog entries to email lists.

Currently, about 4 out of 10 small businesses engage in such activities and more than 75% of them are considering on expanding these tactics next year. A common expansion plan will allow users to sign up for email newsletters and other digital promotions from social sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The benefits of combining these two types of marketing initiatives are already being seen in company pipelines. According to another survey, one company experienced an increased click-through rate from 7.2% to 8.7% by simply adding a social sharing option in their emails.

Email Marketing Drives Cross-Channel Sales

Cross-channel shopping is a major force in total research sales. According to a recent study conducted by Forrester Research, nearly 50% of all sales are influenced by the web.

In another study, nearly six in 10 Internet users around the globe said they were more apt to buy a product in a store after getting a marketing email.

Marketers can also use offline locations to drive email marketing efforts. For example, about one-third of Internet users worldwide said they were willing to give their email addresses to store associates at the cash register. This can build email list volume and give marketers more opportunity to communicate with potential buyers.
